Kathmandu: Senior Nepali Congress leader and former minister Mohammad Aftab Alam passed away early Friday morning while undergoing treatment at Kathmandu Medical College, Sinamangal.
Passed Away During Treatment at 2 AM
According to hospital director and outgoing Congress MP Dr. Sunil Sharma, Alam, who had been receiving treatment for high blood pressure and diabetes for the past month, passed away at 2:00 AM. His condition had worsened over the last week, and he had been kept on a ventilator.
Long and Eventful Political Career
Alam had a long political career in the Nepali Congress. He first entered Parliament after winning a by-election in 2051 BS and went on to serve as Minister of State for Labor (2054 BS) and Minister of State for Forest (2055 BS).
He was re-elected in the 2056 BS parliamentary election and later in the first Constituent Assembly election (2064 BS). Alam also held portfolios as Minister of Land Reforms and Minister of Labor and Transport, and was elected a central member of the party from its 12th General Convention (2067 BS).
Convicted and Later Released on Health Grounds
Alam’s later years were marked by controversy. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly burning two injured individuals in a bomb blast case in Rajpur, Rautahat, on the eve of the first Constituent Assembly election in 2064 BS.
He was released from prison by the Rautahat District Court on Jestha 14, after which he suffered a brain stroke.
Survived by Family
The late leader is survived by two sons and a daughter. Alam’s demise marks the end of a prominent yet turbulent political journey within the Nepali Congress.
